When asking such Questions, it helps to know
1)how much hard disk capacity you have
2) How many partitions
3)Empty space on the hard disk
4)If you have a single OS, or multiple OSes.
5)Plus other configuration about the computer
such as the name of the processor, motherboard, etc.

Only then it is possible to figure out what may have been causing the problem.

Your RAM is probably too slow, see what the MHz. rating is and whether it's DDR2, if any less than 533 MHz for DDR2 or 400MHz for DDR, adding more RAM will actually reduce performance. Also the CAS latency should be checked, but that's rarely a problem if you're manufacturer is reputable and you're RAM doen't exceed 4GB.
If these cases don't fit then ensure you have the DDR sticks configured in dual channel mode(assuming you have DDR, which you should/or RD RAM)
Hope this helps!
