Is there something I should look for in regards to hops which defines they are ready for picking

Before first frost. Mid August to mid September. Check the aroma. Crush a cone and smell. As you crush it look for a yellow powder. When they are ripe, they are dry and papery.

For commercial purposes they are picked when there are green, but I take it that's not your aim. If you are going to use them for pot pourri then pick them when they are almost a golden brown and the leaves look translucent.

They are great for making home made beer... ...heady stuff!
