Nothing Else Matters(Metallica)
I heard this song, and from the first time I loved it. But the reason it is so siginificant is coz one night, I sang it with this freind of mine. like we just sat in a corner and sung the first few lines together. And I ended up falling crazy in love with him. And he fell in love with me. now, I'm just lost without him.
so yea, it really changed my life.

in 1964 the british girl singer 'twinkle' charted with 'terry': a song about a boy who dies in a motorcycle crash.
a few months later the american all-girl band 'the shangri las' also had a hit with 'leader of the pack' - another song about a boyfriend who falls off his bike and dies.
in the shangri-las song the death verse goes:
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know
Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!
....
a few days later i was listening to twinkle's song covering the same theme and i noticed that what she sang went:
he said to me: 'you are the one i want to be with.'
he said to me: 'you are the one to whom my love i shall give.'
one day he'll know how hard i prayed for him to live.
i realised that for twinkle the death happened in hospital and was a slow and probably painful process (as road-crash deaths often are). the shangri-las had swept any idea of pain or suffering under the carpet with their 'whether he heard i'll never know'.
quite suddenly i understood the difference between british pop music and american. at the time this also happened to be the difference between serious art and mass entertainment.
