This is based on something that is now out-of-date. When the upper classes were trying to differentiate themselve from the so-called lower classes they had certain social rules to identify themselves as being the upper crust. One of these was that they wouldn't wear white after Labor Day. This is no longer in effect. Wear white whenever you want to and let me get back to my yacht... ;)
