It's offline right now (because of legal issues -record companies threatening lawsuits, probably) but the Online Guitar Archive (http://www.olga.net) was a great resource for me to figure out tabs and stuff (I'm really a drummer). If they come back online, you'll see they have chords and Tabs for many songs. Do an internet search and I'm sure you'll find other sites like it (although probably not as big).
I think of tabs as a visual representation of a song that is easier to interpret for most people than sheet music. (A Chord is several strings played together. Tabs can show single strings being played as well as chords)
If say a chord is note x, y & z, then a tab just shows you ONE configuration of this -usually the easiest. but you can find those same notes in different positions on different strings all along the fretboard. Tabs make things easier for many people, and people have different learning styles, so to each their own. -And, depending on who created the Tab, it may be incorrect, as people often rely on what they think they are hearing.
Find what you like and what's easiest for you.

Chords are multiple notes in a scale, often the Root -3rd-5th-octave, played together for sonic resonance...
Tablature is a way of seeing exactly where to place your fingers as you see the guitar as you hold it looking down, while musical (staff) notation, sometimes referred to as sheet music, is the way other instruments are usually shown written out. Notation for guitar can be tricky as a note can be interpreted differently... The 5th fret on the 6th string and an open 5th string are the same basic note, A, and written as the same note in notation, tho the different strings along with one being open the other fretted produce slightly different sound, thus making tab easier by far for guitar.
The staff in notation is helpful in other ways, like showing sharp and flat symbols at the beginning indicating what key the song is in. This is a one reason why tabs often have the notation written out above the tablature itself, another being to transpose guitar to piano or another instrument easily.

The only difference between tabs and chords are the way they are written on the sheet. Normally the actual chord name will appear above the fingering tab ie. c7

im not professional guitar player or anything but i do love to play guitar.. anyway, chords is a pattern i follow when i play a song by just strumming and a bit plucking on my guitar, and i use the tab when i like to play a certain song exactly how it is sounded on the cd.
on the tabs, there is a chord u can use for strumming, and those musical notes u see is use for plucking. u choose whether u strum or pluck ur guitar.

tabs are written notes, in an easy way. And chords, are just the chords used in songs, you can use those better when you play acoustic songs.

Tabs are an easy to read representation of a chord.
They show you which finger to place on which string.
