It depends on what you want. If you want IM chatting then Yahoo (only because I HATE Micro$oft). If you are looking at internet phone calls then Skype. Skype does have IM but it is not a high priority for them so not as much effort is put into that side. Yahoo does have PC to PC phone calls but that is not their primary focus.

If you're asking for voice chat, I think MSN is the way to go. It's pretty dynamic. Although I've not messed with Skype all that much.

Text and voice PC to PC chat you could use TRILLIAN it does all the main platforms yahoo, msn, IRC etc.
Talk on VOIP I would recommend the following;
www.voipstunt.com - Free to call loads of landlines in loads of country's.
www.voipcheap.com - Same company as the above same benefits.
Do not use Skype its expensive compared to other VOIP providers.

Skype for close friends and family...no awkward silences...
Yahoo IM is awesome for Apple Macs...
Msn only for Windows!!!

Yahoo deffantaly. I heard they are doing somethinig with ebay (skype intergration could be on the cards) plus the new intergration with Live - Yahoo is the way to go at the moment.
