I'm currently studying accountancy, but I don't really like it.... I am trying very hard to like it. I passed my exams, but the mark's not very high. I like biology and photography but, if I pursue that career, I won't be able to find a job so easily especially when I'm planning to work overseas. Should I pursue what I like or should I continue studying this course? Is there a way in which I can love this course?

Hi. A few thoughts for you to consider:

An accountancy degree is recognised as a foundation for a business career but does not make you an accountant. In most/all countries you have to do further study and exams with a professional body to become Certified/Chartered. If you do this step in one country the qualification is unlikely to be recognised in another so do not thing accountancy qualifications are the most portable things in the world.

Biology qualifications do lead to career paths but they tend to be less well paid compared to pure business or accountancy (lab techs, teachers etc). The basic qualifications, however, may be more transferable than accountancy as there is no legal/regulatory body saying who is a biologist in the same way there is for accountancy.

Photography is very competitive career and many/most that start on the path to doing it eventually fail or fall into a basic job like wedding photography rather than high profile/earning positions in advertising and the like. It is however very portable. If you get recognised in one country you should not have trouble working in another (work permits permitting).

Why not consider doing photography as an elective/spare time course in addition to oneof the other two? If it takes off then you could go down that route as a career but if it does not develp then you would still have plan A.

Final thought. Have you considered a general Business Administration/Sciences degree rather than accountancy? The course is usually broader covring more subjects but is generally not in as much detail as a pure accounting degree. Such a course could keep your options in business open while giving you some relief from pure accounting and also it would give variety too (sociology, psychology, marketing, economics, law, some stats/forecasting etc (plus basic accounting).

Hope it works out.

Well I did a Bsc in biology and loved it..mostly.

But now I can't find a job. That is partly the issues of my country but then again it could be my career choice.

My fiance is an accountant and has a fine job with fine money. So I guess choose you love or money.

I could have studied accounting but I would have been bored to death. Got 93% in school though.

You just got to decide I guess.

When I was a chemistry major, I changed to accounting because I was working during the day and couldn't finish my lab classes. I didn't want to quit my job, so I changed my major.

I make a lot more money than the average chemist now, but I hate my job, and the business world in general.

Follow your heart and study biology. Your passion will help win you a job.

Do what you WANT to do. There is nothing more soul destroying than spending your whole working life wishing you were doing something else. I took my own path and although I am not a rich man my work feels like a hobby that people pay me to do and I love every day of it.
