Plenty of bang for the buck; either on the 1/4 mile or the track. The availability of after-market performance parts is excellent as well.

They are not really that popular for racing.
Civics may be popular in import drag racing and autocrossing because those are racing series where people race their own cars and Civics are so popular as street cars. However, across all professional drag racing the civic is no where except in the import classes which had to be created because the imports couldn't originally compete against the american cars.

None of the japanese manufacturers have ever been successful in professional endurance racing like 24 hr of Le Mans, ALMS, 24 hrs of Daytona, Grand Am.

Civics are popular as street cars because people think they are "reliable" but I don't think you ever trust a single manufacturer to make all of their cars totally reliable all the time. A friend bought a new RSX S-type 2 years ago and had engine problems from the start. It was burning oil at the rate of about a quart every 100 miles. The dealer was completely perplexed and couldn't help her. An entire new engine was going to be $6000 so she is just going to trade it in.
I have plenty of japanese cars that were crap and plenty of american cars that ran perfectly.

There engines are easily tuned for performance, well-built and robust! Plus, a lot of work has gone into the honda engines so there is less trial and error.
