I've been a teacher for over 22 years, mostly at the second grade level. Recently, I accepted a position (and signed a contract) for a high school English position. It was a nightmare job- like working as a jail guard. I went from teaching the alphabet to teaching "thugs" who came to class high, had tattoos and piercings all over their body, had no respect for anyone and who refused to do any work at all and did nothing but interrupt the class. I obviously do not have the rapport to work with this age level. I miss my 6 year olds. I cannot do this. The principal said that the board would probably not let me out of my contract. I do feel bad about leaving them high and dry, but I just don't feel like I can teach this level. I have had a substitute for the last 3 days, as I feel I cannot take it even one more day. In Texas, if you break your contract, they can suspend your teaching certificate for a year. I am depressed and need advice.

Contact an attorney AND the State Education Board.

File a complaint with the Principal, School Board, School District. CITE your reasons WHY you want to leave.

Make an appointment with your DOCTOR to discuss this matter. Medical reasons COULD get your release!

Ask the Director of Human Resources what your options are. Then ask your teachers' union rep or help from the State's Teacher Association. My experience has shown that most times the Board will release you.
