My desktop pc doesn't get turned off unless the power goes out. Or I need to move it around. It's been running like this for over 3.5 years without a problem.

Make sure you have good ventilation around the fans. Also make sure the PC is set to go into hibernate/sleep mode after so many minutes to save on electricity.

My notebook.. I turn that off when I'm done using it.

Laptops tend to heat up and can lead to frying the board, which in turn breaks other things...like having access to your HD. A lot of the newer desktop models have sufficient cooling methods, but making sure you keep the area around it clutter free will aid in circulation of air as well.

It's better than shutting it down and restarting it every day. I usually just restart mine once a week. Sometimes at night I'll put it in standby if it's not working on anything.
