You cant go wrong by making sure you have a good word processor. Word is great, naturally, and there are toolbars you can download that have default script writing functions: slugline, action, character, dialogue etc...

There are several different formats for different "venues": film, television.

The BBC have a section on their expansive site about the television format,

for hollywood, i found this article useful: http://www.oscars.org/nicholl/format.html

as a script writing myself, i found FinalDraft script writing programme incredible to work with. It gives you summaries, character listings, reports of word repetition etc... its expensive but worth it if you plan to make a go of your work.

I found reading scripts from Drews Script o Rama extremely useful. the formatted ones (not so much the transcripts) are good for getting the format in your head. Useful exercise is to read a script and then see the movie afterwards to get an idea how your mind works when it comes to the written word. Make sure its a script that you haven't already watched as a movie.

If you have any questions or need hep, give, just email!

go to Borders or Barnes & Noble website and look up screenplays. One of the books will explain this.

If you send screenplays to anyone be sure to keep the original and send them a copy and make sure you get it copywrited or they can easily steal it from you.

The entertainment business is quite a cutthroat operation. If they think you are unwise they will not hesitate to exploit you and take serious advantage of you.

Good Luck!

basically, this means that the dialogue is squished together and everything is centered on the page (there are additional rules about how to end a page, but you can look these up.)
