I know we had a "race to the moon" against the Soviet Union, and I've seen the photos of the US flag on the moon, so my question is, is the moon US territory? Like explorers from the 1500s that conquered lands for their country in the new world, did we do that with the moon?

Why hasn't any other country gone to the moon then? Why did the Soviet give up? I orginally figured, the US was there first, its ours, so no one else could really go there. This is a serious question, i dont appreciate the smart *** remarks.

No. The moon is , despite the stupid answers you have received, international territory like the South Pole.

The USA never claimed the moon as a territory. However, we did establish a base there (Tranquility Base), and planted a US flag. We even left a rover there and a couple of golf balls....
How American is that?
LOL, sanjeev, Sounds like you have moon envy.

No.
By international treaty, planets and moons cannot be claimed by any country on Earth.
It is true, however, that there are people selling land on the Moon, on Mars and even Venus!
Leave the lunatics do what they want with their money.
On the other hand, since US is so greedy for territory and does not respect any treaties, I would not be surprised that, one day, they actually place such a claim, leading us into yet another war.
(And if the Moon became one day a US territory, I would never go there either...)

No, there's a dude who sells pieces of the moon on the internet and he claims once he goes to the moon he'll stake out as much of land as possible.

No, Australia got there first. But I guess you can claim Iraq as US territory. The 51st state (or whatecer number they are up to now).
