Civil rights had nothing to do with "gays" coming out of the closet. Our culture changed to one of more permissive viewpoints of right and wrong and that's what allowed them to come out.
I believe as a country, we are on a slippery slope heading to some state of existance that is much less than healthy. I don't accept the gay thing and believe it is a biological abnormality, certainly not something that should be embraced as normal behavior.
Our country cannot forever continue to accept all things as normal and good, just because some section of the population deems it to be their lifestyle.
By accepting everything, our culture will continue to degrade until we have no standards of conduct at all. In time, everything will be acceptable...

Better for Who - - - you cannot expect coherent responses if you pose stupid questions. Actually a lot of Gays are in the closet and all the civil rights legislation in The World will not pry them lose. In America & Britain & other countries blackmailing people becuase of their sexuality was a big industry during the fifties & sixties - - - there are several British films touching on the subject. It was great for the hatemongers because after bashing a guy nearly to death that person would be reluctant to go to the law for help, so guess it was good for them.

No. Partly because I wasn't born yet.
I'm sure life was perfect for straight white men before all of that happened.
But what about every other race?
Probably not.
