The climate is typical of tropical islands of similar latitude. It is always warm, but with sea-breezes. Rainfall is irregular, but usually dry during the north-east, and very wet during the south-west, monsoons. Not only does rainfall vary from annually, but there are often major differences between places close to one another. The Islands are not usually strongly affected by the cyclones that move through the Bay of Bengal, though they are within the influence of most. The Andamans were once important for monitoring weather in the region for the benefit of the Indian mainland and ships at sea in the Indian Ocean. A meteorological station was established at Port Blair in 1868.
