Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian, was an explorer and cartographer who put his name to a series of Maps and people didn't argue, America sounded good enough to European ears - - - no solid reason why people did not stick with Amerigo - - - as for the Natives they called America --- OURS --- -- a number of variations of 'our land' or 'the great land,' there was no collective Native name for the two Continents. the Natives did not have a Continental Mind Set, their focus was their turf, their territory, many of those retaining a European and then American version of the Native name such as Michigan.

america is from the name Amerigo Vespucci. he is an italian navigator to whom the discovery of north and south america was credited to.

it was actually christopher columbos who discovered it but he thought he reached india in their search for spice thus the people they found there were called Indians.

later on amerigo vespucci navigated there and found out that it was not india they reached but a whole new land which was later called the new world.

america came from the name of the second guy that headed to find this land, his name americo vespucci, he kept actual accounts and logs of his trip. the guy before him was columbus. they all set out from spain. columbus to prove to the queen of spain that the world was not square but round did not keep records, so the other guy got the fame. before the earopeans arrived this land was indian land like mexico but the indian name for their land i am unaware of or have forgotten, sorry, good question. helps people realize this is not even our land to put up borders to keep out the native indians like some mexicans are.
