To keep them from rattling around and to absorb moisture, sometimes there will also be a packet of Silica Gel. Keep the packet and use it in salt shakers so the salt doesn't clump (or in any other edible granular stuff, like sugar), but DON'T use the Silica found in things like leather goods and shoes, throw those out immediately.
