Scientifically you can find out using the new 3D/4D ultrasound machine. This technology can even detect the sex of the baby as early as 3 months.
As for old wives tales, here are some:
- If your tummy is protruding instead of expanding sideway, it's most likely a boy. Vice versa.
- If during your pregnancy you feel like you don't want to dress up at all, it's most likely a boy.
- If your apperance (your face, hair, etc) is worse off during pregnancy, it's most likely a boy. Vice versa.
- The morning sickness increases when it's a girl compared to when it's a boy

My doctor recommended 20 weeks to find out and some people say 14-16 weeks you can tell too. All of the wives tales are wrong a lot. It's worth the wait. I had to wait until about 28 weeks because my daughter was hiding at the 20 week ultrasound.

Do you really want to know the sex??? I found out with my first one and didn't with the second. It was definitely more exciting the second time around not knowing. If you have your heart set on finding out then the gyne can tell you only from about 16 weeks and only if baby is in the right position. As far as old wives tales, thats exactly what they are. I carried both my children very differently and I have two girls....

The only way to tell would be through an amnio... which hurt, are dangerous and there is no way a doctor would order one unless you were in some kind of trouble.

A baby's gender is all ready determined, however, there are no "visible" external parts yet.

Sometimes they can tell as early as 15 or 16 weeks, especially if the baby is a boy. But, to get an accurate ultrasound, it's best to have one between 18 - 22 weeks.

It's too early for ultrasound to be able to show this. The foetus is still far too small. Be patient and wait until you're about 20 weeks, and get a scan then. You'll know soon enough. Forget old wives tales, they tend to be 50% accurate - think about it...

Usually they say to do this at the Level II ultrasound (18-26 weeks), by then the sex organs are fully formed and usually very close to being acurate.

These are some fun ways you can get an idea, then compare them to the ultrasound, apparently I am having a boy, but I will know in 2 weeks.

Good Luck time will fly by before you know it.
