It depends on your state's laws, and even counties vary in court costs. My local court offered a free class to walk me through the papers and the filing, but it still cost a few hundred bucks for me to file the paperwork with the court clerk. My ex and I were in your exact situation. Uncontested and amicable.

In England you can go straight to the Court and get forms to fill in for both of you. You fill them in and send them back with a fee (forgotten how much this is, I think it was around £200) and, hey presto it is done! Once the decree nisi is granted after the forms are sent back then six weeks later you file for the decree absolute. No solicitors with their big fat fees need to be involved. My now husband did this with his ex-wife two years ago. They had children but it was still that simple. Hope this helps.

Not going to happen. Uncontested divorce still cost a few hundred. You both should get the same lawyer. Ask a few lawyers home much a uncontested divorce cost.

Go to the courts and apply for a 'do it yourself divorce'... I know people who have done this, but theres a lot of running around involved.

my current spouse and i did ours for FREE. just a few bucks to the court. we found an organization over in Burbank, CA that offered a course in do-it-y divorce. i'd guess there are lots of those d-i-y groups out there now. look one up on google.
