most monitors are LCD nowadays, but is there a term for the older "classic" monitors (that are not LCD)?

Looks like all the monitors are LCD now. Do they even sell non-LCD monitors at stores?

What I don't like about typical LCD displays is that the screen gets too dark or bright depending on how you look at it. Are there LCDs that doesn't do that?

You better believe CRT monitors are still being sold. The display quality of LCDs still cannot compete with CRTs, though it's getting there.

The computer graphics industry still uses CRTs pretty much exclusively, as do some serious computer gamers.

However, since LCD are slowly getting to a point where they can complete with CRTs in terms of quality (as opposed to space or power usage, where LCDs win flat out), some companies, Sony for one, have already discontinued their CRT lines.

CRTs still have some market value(though rapidly declining) because of their superior response times. However new LCDs have response times no greater than 2ms, so the market segment will disappear soon enough.
The problem you've experienced was quite common with LCDs about 4 years back. New LCDs rectify this issue, I've had good experiences with Samsung, Viewsonic, Dell(newer 30"), BenQ, etc. When buying an LCD give particular caution to the contrast ratio and brightness rather than just the resolution.
Alternatively you could pay a the extra for a small OLED which is quite superior to LCDs and Plasma(though lasting less)
For a computer monitor though, most alternatives to LCD are just not viable right now. But then LCDs aren't the enemy, you should make an educated buying decision, read trustworthy reviews, check the specs, etc.

Not all LCD's are the same, you need to realize that.

Many have better viewing angles than others. In addition, there are several different LCD technologies out there. Active Matrix LCD's are typically more expensive but are brighter and have wider viewing angles.

Like another person said, CRT monitors are the other option. They are still sold everywhere today. Just walk into a BestBuy or CompUSA and you'll see them. They are still a bit cheaper than LCD per inch of diagonal screen space...

LCD = liquid cristal display
CRT = Cathode Ray Tube

These are the only two kinds of monitors nowadays. There are also plasma screens, but they are used as a TV/monitor rather than a standalone monitor.

CRT or Cathode Ray Tubes are argued upon having more rich colors. I don't know any more since there are no absolutes in this field. You can still get tube screens, dig around.

The more upmarket plasma and crystal screens have a wider viewing angle. Pay up...

Well, you can try to flat screens.

I see big, old CRT monitors in the garbage all the time. And soon, I will add to it!
