I think the more accurate question is, Why do you want for god to exist?
Gods are so obviously an invention of the human imagination that it's hard to understand how a rational being can still believe in them. But of course, the god meme has the characteristic of disengaging the part of the brain that demands evidence and separates reality from wishful thinking.
The concept of gods are an evolution of the earlier concept of animism, which was simply ascribing unknown things (e.g. wind, lightning, life, diseases) to mysterious spirits. Gods later became incorporated into a larger meme called religion, which included morality enforcement, authority reinforcement, communal bonding, explanations for death and creation, etc. Nowadays the purpose of gods is chiefly as a means of explaining creation, and in morality enforcement--bribing good behavior with heaven in the afterlife and threatening bad behavior with hell.
Of course, that pesky ol' science keeps wanting to intrude on the whole creation question with its evidence, observations, peer review, logic, built-in error correction, etc. And morality? It's the morality of a child which relies on punishment/reward systems rather than teaching the doing of good for its own sake.
So really, we have no need of gods anymore. A growing number of us freethinkers are coming to realize that. And, I like to think that as humanity gradually matures as a species, that we'll eventually leave behind the concept of gods and religions just as we largely have with animism. Once we can free ourselves of those mental binds, we will be truly free to pursue our goals and live our lives in a peaceful, rational world free of superstitions and fantastical make-believe thinking.
BTW, a note to the person above who wrote that 95% of people believe in a god, therefore the rest should too. First of all, that figure is closer to 84% for the world, and about 90% for the U.S. Second, reality is not up for a vote. A few centuries ago nearly everyone believed the world was flat; should no one have doubted that, just because it was the majority opinion?
Oh, and to mindidiom, you have no frickin' idea what atheism really is. Please educate yourself from a source other than whatever church group you belong to. (Try the 2nd link below for starters.)

Of course not!
It's simply the only answer some people could come up with when they couldn't understand certain things.
Things are just the way they are, and there's no need for any god or religion.
Knowledge of things as they are is the answer to everything. Of course we don't know everything... YET, but that's part of the deal!

God is a figment of prehistoric mans imagination!
If you believe that some Deity created this world, a small insignificant little spec of dust on the outer edge of an insignificant little Galaxy in the tens of bullion, billion, billion little bits of dust, with humanity in mind, boy do you have a good imagination.

This is something you must answer for yourself. Look into what all of the great men in history have said and most importantly look into yourself and through your life. It is something that you must find out on your own. It is really the only worthwhile pursuit in life, dont you think?
