Well partner doesn't specify gender. But besides that, some people don't feel the need or desire to take vows of marriage in order to commit to each other or feel married - to be married under the law persay- they may feel that they are perfect the way they are and don't need to take that next step - also some people don't want to get divorced so they avoid marriage.

Some states recognize couples that live together for a while as common law marriage and afford them the same rights. - While these are different titles, their committment to each other may be the same.

a wife has all the legal rights while a lived-in partner has nothing. In case anything happens to you, she is not even allowed to draw money from the bank for your funeral.

well first of all a peice of paper and also...the government pays you lees back at tax time when you get married.
my meaning this...we have friends that have been togeather a lot
longer than us who havent gatten married yet and have 2 less dependants than us. they bring in about the same pay as us and they get back almost 2,000 dollars more each year at tax time.
it almost doesnt pay to get married.
