Charlotte Bronte published the novel in 1847, but am not sure of the time period in which the novel is set in.

Women - it would refer to dress, marriage, family, etc.
Society - their views on women, their values, etc.

Thanks in advance.

The end of the novel is more or less contempory with its publishing though the dates are not stated directly in the book.

Jane represents an unusual woman for the period in that she makes her own choices as to employment (teaching was just about the only job available for a lady) and her own moral choices. She is quietly brave and resourceful. She demands the right to be treated as an equal - which lead some contemporary critics to brand her unwomanly.

it is all about the Victorian age: values, moral conduct, etc.
if you consider taking the woman's role in society, focus on her life and chances in a men dominated world.
