When was the last time your washing machine was cleaned?
.... and I don't mean wiped over with a cloth , I mean have the inside drum removed and cleaned thoroughly.
You'd be surprised as to the amount of grime sticks to the outside of the drum.
Most people wouldn't have the first clue as to go about this , so it would pay to get someone who knows what they are doing.
Besides from the machine itself , It may also pay to have the water and the pipes checked too , the pipes could be rusty inside.

Are you washing the whites in hot water with bleach?
If so and they're still coming out dingy, try using Clorox (or other name brand) bleach. If you use a cheaper bleach you really can tell the difference, the cheap stuff won't whiten as good as a name brand. You can also try a little oxi-clean in the wash, that helps.
Also if you have hard water it'll effect the whiteness of clothes.

Probably it's the pipes, or the laundry machine itself needs cleaning...

Some old laundry machines have a "lint trap." sort of thing. It's usually just under the lip of the machine inside. Lint from all your clothes can build up, and collect dye. It'll be a sticky hairy wet mess that you'll probably have to hose off to clean it.

You might also check around the bottom near the agitator (pole in the middle) and around the top near the rim of the machine to see if a dark sock or something got stuck in there. You'd be surprised...

it may be the washing machine itself, you might have some kind of colorant just under the wash bucket that breaks down when you add the bleach or wash detergent and colors the water just enough to leave residue on your clothes --- i would try running the machine with just water and detergent once or twice and then taking a cleaning rag and wiping out the wash bucket.
