Listen to how people conjugate their verbs. Don't read what people write here as many of them use a form of shorthand that is NOT proper American English.

Also, you might want to pick up a kind of dictionary called "American English, Usage and Style" It can help you to understand how and why certain words are used in certain situations.

Get a book of American idioms and figures of speech. Also, watching TV and reading books in English should help!
