In cali you can do both, I recommend the appointment. saves time.

It might depend not only on the state, but on the town/city as well.
Where I live in CA it is recommended to schedule an appt for ANYTHING you need to do at DMV that is of any urgency or importance: the line is way too long. Call them up, save yourself some time in the line.
Here, even with appointment, people wait like 2 hours for their driving test (there is always something going on - they are suddently too short of people or stuff like that, you know, it's DMV)

You just go.....and wait and wait and wait for your turn to take the test. At least that's the way it is here.

go to your states website and check it out. it would probably be a LOT quicker, i'm talking hours, (at least thats how it is in florida) if you get an appointment.
