Actually, galaxy means "Milky Way". On a very dark clear night, especially in January or July, you can look up and see a band of faint white light, like a cloud that doesn't move, across the sky. The ancient Greeks named it the Milky Way, which in Greek is "galaxios", galaxy.

The Milky Way Galaxy is named for its milky appearance. There's a Greek poem that describes the galaxy as "that shining wheel, men call it Milk." To the Greeks, the galaxy was called "Galaxias kuklos," or "Milky Band." To the Romans, it was "Via Lactea," or "Road of Milk." The Greek word for milk is "gala," and the word galaxy is derived from it. Human cultures have different names for the Milky Way, like "Celestial River" or "Celestial Road or Path."

The name itself came from the ancient Greek galaxies kyklos, or ring of milk, due to its faint milky appearance. Our Milky Way is a large spiral galaxy. Its diameter is at least 100,000 light-years, and may contain as many as 200 billions stars today.

Because of its appearance. We have so much light pollution these days it is hard to see the stars properly, but way back in time the ancient Greeks were reminded of a stream of milky white across the sky.

Our galaxy name came BEFORE the candy bar.....so the more appropriate question would be: Why did Hershey call his candy bar "Milky Way?"
I heard they found a new galaxy just beyond ours...they've dubbed it "Snickers"
I live near the towns of Plano and Sandwich, they're thinking about making a new town between them and calling it "Bologna."

galaxy means milky way in greek (gala=milk). Because it looks a little like a white substance spilt in the sky. In greek mythology, it was the milk of a godess that was breast feeding and it was spilt in space and that's how it became.
