Most humans certainly have the capability for violence within them, but are on the whole a good and peaceful species. The proof of this is simply that we're still here and haven't extincted ourselves yet. If violence were the rule rather than the exception, at the very least civilization would be impossible; more likely, we'd have wiped ourselves out long ago.
I don't know the circumstances of why the other person attacked you or if you had options other than physical violence to respond, but from a moral standpoint there is much less wrong in using violence in defense than there is in the initiation of violence against another.

You are not animals however, you are human beings, and human beings are above animals. Some not by much granted, but self control is something that we all must learn to muster if we are to live together as decent law abiding human beings.
And don't say you don't want that because it's every person's duty as a human being to live and let live....if you don't fall into that line of thinking then you don't fit in with the norm of what is expected from a civilized society. That's why there is such anarchy, chaos and grief in the world...some say anger its just love wronged...but I think it's so much more its love absent and that's when you go sociopath and cross the line over to violence. Without love there is no conscience, no compassion, no chance of peace.

I will try to have you understand your question. Humans are naturally violent, and they are naturally non violent. It is embedded in our DNA and jeans from our forefathers of all life and existence.
What we have is the humanity to understand our existence and the capability to control our actions. If someone or something attacks us we instinctively defend ourselves the best we know how. Some times this leads to more violence and sometimes it doesn't.
Therefore depending on how you perceive yourself is how you will react to any situation. If you perceive yourself as strong and courageous you will become more violent to ward off any acts, if you see yourselves as mild mannered you may fight or just try to control the anger. If you see yourself as helpless you will just take what is coming at you with anger or fear but will not become more violent.
These are traits that the human soul has. The hard part is knowing when and how to control the anger and limit the violence. That is want the non-violent side of you does. You could think of it as good and evil, good and bad.
Every one must work at evolving to a better understanding of him or herself. Good Luck

Anger leads to violence and it is a basic human response to survive any threatening situation. But then most of the time its irrational & pointless. Violence is never a solution to a problem. More hatred, more injury and more often death and destruction. Believe it or not, India got independence from British rule through non-violence. "a harsh word sturrs up stride, a soft turns away wrath".

yes, humans are naturally violent. We have not yet evolved into a being that can handle conflict, insults, etc. without getting upset and violent. I don't know how long it will be before we emerge as more perfect human beings, however, until then we will continue to kill one another with unprecedented violence.

It's like saying I just killed someone because someone was trying to kill me, but because I'm admitting it, it is not as bad as I think it is, right? Sorry, go back to the drawing board. If someone tries to kill you, you might still have some mercy and spare their lives, send them to prison or a mental hospital. Otherwise, you are as bad as they are, just having different reasons.
