I can`t say i`m satisfied with my ipod video =/ really bcoz battery runs out real quick and that is the main problem. if you `ll chose ipod video then it plays only 2hrs of video. I have a problem with mine it plays only 2 hrs of MUSIC not video. I wanted my ipod real bad but now i want to throw it away =/ . so think twice b4 you make a choice

SanDisk is certainly Cost effective and good quality. While Ipod is slightly better quality and comparitively expensive.
Ipod takes all songs and convert them through thier itunes program. They will play MP3 formatted songs.
Many of the Sandisk versions will also convert many songs into Mp3s but also into other formats. For instance fomats at double the compression of an MP3 leading to double the song capacity.

I don't know about cost effective, but the iPod video is a good buy, it is the best mp3 player plus it can play videos ( though you must convert it to mp4 format )

ipod canot play more than one format but itunes converts all formats to play on your ipod that is your best opion

Sandisk. The 8GB one with microSD expansion looks nice.
