Either your alternator is knackered , the battery wont hold its charge or both. Take it to your local auto electrician and get both tested.

The battery light comes on simply because the engine stops and the alternator is not putting out amperage. Thats normal. The reason you engine stalls is another story. It does needs attention of a good repairman. Will the engine start back up in neutral or do you have to go to park to start it? If it starts back up in neutral you probably have an idling speed problem which could be a host of things starting with turn a certain screw. Could be the computer whicn is controled by a sensor/s. Get it checked. Pops

Sounds like your idle speed is too low. Your alternator must maintain at least a certain speed, or it will not continue to charge. When the idle speed gets too low, the battery light comes on to let you know it is no longer charging the battery. At what times does the vehicle run right? Is your fuel filter clogged? A little more information would be helpful in this situation. Take it to a mechanic, it doesn't sound like much of a problem and shouldn't take long to get to the bottom of things. There are so many things that could cause your problem, that no one person can steer you in the right direction without knowing more. Good Luck!

I'm disagreeing with everybody else.

a. You need to put this car on an OBD reader at a garage to find out if there is anything wrong with the electrical system.

b. You could have a loose belt.

c. When was your last tune up? You may be stalling out because you need a tune up. The last tune up you had, were the right parts installed. If you have a car that requires platinum plugs and you have regular plugs in it, it will not run right and you will have problems that masquerade as other things. Your mechanic will not figure this out, because the diagnosis will not show up on the OBD and kind of defies common sense.

Good luck. BTW- if its a Ford definitely check all of the above- especially Escorts.

FIRST- why the heck you put car in neutral to slow down???
Unsafe for both car and driver(and illegal some places)!

Whether automatic or stick learn to use the advantages of either and save a fortune in brake repairs!

That said under almost all normal type situations your car's engine should idle normally in neutral. Sure it is not normal to use neutral at speed but barring certain possibilities(are you used to doing that in that car without this problem with same conditions- A/C and lights on etc?) your engine should continue to run.

Which means a battery or charging circuit problem has occured.
Check and eliminate problem found.

Good start(oh the pun) by not placing car in neutral like that(Unless stick at stoplight!)!

Reminds me of a friend who used to turn off car going down hill to save gas. Boy was he surprised when he got a car with steering lock!

putting it in neutral means you are just idling it but because it turns off when you do that putting in neutral thing, it means your idle speed is very low. could also be your engine is out of tune. have it checked by an experienced mechanic, have a proper tune-up. whenever an engine of a car turns off, the battery light turns on.(provided the ignition switch is still engaged)

Definately the alternator. Get it fixed soon, or you won't have to worry about putting it in neutral to slow it down. It will slow down and stop on its own.

sounds like you are poping the clutch. You might want to get the trans checked out if you are good at driving a stick, otherwise, you may need some practice as you are not shifting properly
