It really bothers my wife!

Have a regular sleep schedule and get enough sleep during the night and I think you'd stop shuddering.

It could be related to sleep paralysis, something I sometimes deal with when I sleep.

A rush of hormones prevents you from sleep walking or freaking out while in sleep paralysis. This could be related to your shuddering.

Auditory hallucinations also occur in sleep paralysis, it is one of the more disturbing parts of it (imagine a CLANG sound while you sleep).

Maybe the unusual things you do before or during sleep are an unconscious defense mechanism against sleep paralysis. Knowing your wife is there helps you snap out of a sleep paralysis episode before it can even begin.

I believe it has to do with your muscles relaxing and your brain not getting the chemcial message. It's common, so I've been told. Sleep paralysis is like that, only weird muscular things happen when you're sleeping--the brain being awake when the body isn't. At any rate, it's happened to lots of people, including me. It happens right when you doze off and then you're BOING up a foot above your bed. I thought it was weird too.

I don't know, but I do it too, so you're certainly not crazy. It's probably something to do with the concious and subconcious bits of your brain interacting, but I'm no scientist, so I'll leave that to someone else...

my boyfriend twitches all over as he is falling asleep, i don't really know what causes it, but i don't think it signifies anything being wrong, i think it's kind of cute, tell your wife to chill out. unless it's violent enough to wake her up, i don't see why it would be a problem.
