When a movie gets nominated for an academy award and the movie isn't officialy on dvd yet, they send a screener to the academy members so they can evaluate the movie.

Or if you want to get your movie distributed the studio might want a screener to see if its worth it.

If you want your movie reviewed you send out a screener to the critic.

Theres are a lot of reasons for screeners.

It is a dvd for screener purpose. It is not for sale and it is just a copy usually for film awards or people who got something to do with the film itself. I is a property of the company who makes the movie and it is not for public presentation. Usually they put a message that periodically in the movie or they make the movie flip to black and white couples of time or they just make half(not quite half but not finished) movie. I think there alot other thing too. They make this for people not to copy the movie. And it is illegal to have this movie screener.
