Just be honest - you were wondering if the position was still available and if you could discuss your skills with someone. You believe you are a good match for the position because 1)2)3) (You'll have to figure that out.)

Be polite & honest. Try to make it a mini-interview and sell them on your skills. Even if they have filled this position, you might be able to get them to think of you next time ...

You should definitely call back. It shows how much you want the job. Say something like, "I'm calling to follow up on my application the other day - what is the status?"
If you get rejected you can always ask what was it that they find not suitable about you as it is something you can improve on for future job applications

Just call and say "Hi, I am calling to follow up on my interview last week with so and so? I was wondering if there was any decision made?"

I hate when they don't bother to call you back unless you are selected...at least this way you know and will stop waiting. Don't have any qualms about calling. It will show you're interested and after all this will be your future company if you are so act like you're ready to be a part of it!!!! :~)

Call and ask if the position has been filled. Be prepared to hear 'Yes'. Anytime I interview, I ask for an approximate notification of employment date. Employers generally move quickly once a decision has been made. Good luck. I hope you get the job!

Just say that you submitted your resume/application, (however many days ago), and that you wanted to check on it's status, ie: if anyone had looked it over, if you could make an appointment with the manager/personnel office.

"Hi, my name is _________. I applied to your (store, business, restaurant, etc.) a few ___________ ago, and I was wondering how long the application review process will take."
That should at least let them know what you're looking for.
