Former Catholic (now Atheist) speaking...

I did a web search on this issue to see if there were any papal decrees that specifically prohibited the use of a tampon. I found none.

However, the rumor that using a tampon is unacceptable originates in many conservative Catholic countries (especially down in South America and the Philippines), where it is common belief that using a tampon equals a loss of virginity. Also, Poland (the most right-wing Catholic country in Europe) banned advertisements for tampons from television during the pope's visit (see source below).

But you, my dear, are an American, and you don't have to hold the same fears as more sheltered Catholics do. Since the pope has not expressly forbid the use of tampons, you should be in the clear.

I think there is something to this "superstition" or belief. I have had at least two friends tell me they don't use them and made clear that there was something "unclean" about using them. Both were married women with several children, so it isn't a virginity issue.

I got the feeling that they had been taught that touching yourself down there was just too disgusting or too close to being like masturbation.
