Unless they've changed it since I went to school in Alberta (you don't even want to know how long ago...), it's like this:
ECS (name they use for kindergarten)
Grades 1-6 elementary school
Grades 7-9 junior high
Grades 10-12 high school

My junior high was actually in the same building as an ECS/elementary school (not the one I went to) but we were in a separate part and didn't use the same facilities at the same time (like the gym) I don't think. In junior high we were moving from room to room for the different subjects but most of the time the groups themselves stayed the same.

Yup, your mom is right. Elementary is K-6, Jr. High 7-9, and high school is 10-12!

Lot's of schools have Elementary/Jr. High, and Jr. High/High school in the same building. You bump into the older/younger crowds but don't usually use the same facilities...and they try to make recess at different times so there are no conflicts.

G'day Glitter-n-Gloss,

Thanks for the question.

According to Alberta Education, High School is between Years 10-12.

Yeah, high schools grade 10-12 here, usually in a seperate school than junior high.

I just depends on which school district you are in, each community has it's own school district, and they are the ones that decide things like that. They are also the ones who decide what dates the school year will start and end, how long christmas/easter/spring breaks will be, and all that fun stuff.
