First of all you do have a rare type of blood. That is a very good reason to give blood for you and others that may need your type of blood in their life.

So number one thing to do is to donate your blood to a blood bank. The Red Cross has information on this and can give you credits on the amount of blood you donate, so that in the future you need your type of blood then you will not be charged so much for it.

Also I believe that Type O positive blood is compatible with our blood type if an emergency arises.

So give a little of yourself and be a hero to others you don't know. Give Blood on a regular basis.

First off, the correct reference is AB negative. (For reference, there are 29 different recognized blood type systems, according to Wikipedia, but the other subgroups are less utilized.)

The ABO system and Rhesus system have proven to be the most important indicators of compatibility.

The rule with blood donation are positive can receive negative, but not vice-versa, and you can receive any ABO you possess, with O being called the "universal donor" (anyone can receive O blood) and AB called the "universal receiver" (A, B, O, and AB can be received by an AB.)

I'm sure that you get hounded by blood banks, assuming you've ever donated, since your blood type, as you noted, is quite rare and consequently in demand. (Doctors prefer to use type-matched blood.)

However, in case of emergency, you can take blood from anyone who is Rhesus negative. Nothing to worry about.

If possible, tell the first responders - since chances are good that if you're in a situation where you have to worry about blood loss, you're staring paramedics and firefighters - your blood type, allergies, and meds. If you have a serious condition, like diabetes, HIV, renal failure, etc., get a Medicalert bracelet.

If I were you I would donate blood to the American Red Cross, especially if you are healthy, you could make the difference in someone living or dying. I would also if I knew I was going to have surgery, donate my own blood for the procedure. Giving blood is good for you and makes you feel good about yourself. I had to stop because of severe anemia, but gave over 2 gallons while I was able.

The best thing for you to do is to donate blood, reserving some of your own blood in case you need a transfusion. My brother spent several months in the hospital undergoing dialysis because they gave him the wrong blood. Fortunately he survived.

1. You are not the one to diagnose a need for blood.
2. If you ever do in fact need blood, the trained medical professionals will know what to do.

Before you NEED to have more blood, go to the hospital and let them know your concerns. They will take some blood from you and store it in case you need it. You can do this numerous times so you will have enough stored.
Also, anyone can take blood plasma.
