i think it is popular because it represents what the author wants it to be... and not the reader... the reader in most of the cases cant modify the document...
Also you just need a free reader to read it...
it can easily be shared through internet or floppies...
works in most computer...with any platform...windows, linux, unix,,,,,,not like microsoft .doc files...
... rest i dont know... i have to think about it... more... but for now i think it will be enough... (me becoming lazy)

PDF---Portable Document File.
There. 3 words. It's a Portable Document that's a file!
PDF files are quite popular because they are a way to send a snapshot of your work to any computer with a PDF viewer on it. The most common is Adobe Acrobat http://www.adobe.com/acrobat , which is free and can be downloaded by anyone with Internet access.
It is used by many people in the world because they know that they can send it to anyone, and they will be able to view it, not modify it, and print it. Sending a Microsoft Word document can be hard, because not all computers have Word, or you can run into compatibility errors.
It's different from other types of files because it is practically a web page: You can print it, save it, read it, but not modify it.
Hope this helps!
Monkeys!
P.S. I love sending PDF's to people--no chance of them modifying it.

Portable Document Format. Its professional for companies, students, and everyone else. You could send a plain ol Word Perfect Document but what happens when who your sending it to gets it. They can change the content that you wrote. PDF's are very clean and cannot be changed. Atleast not as easy! Now you'll able to send vidoes and music files inside a PDF, so its gettin more like sending your very own web page to someone or if your making a guide for something.

PDF files are pretty universal. If you make one using Windows, someone using a Mac can read it.
Other file formats, such as Microsoft Word's .doc, are not so universal, and tend to come out all screwy when viewed on, say, Appleworks on a Mac.
