The show was filmed before a live audience on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, CA.
In later years, due to the number of scenes in each episode, half of each show was shot with one audience in the afternoon and the other half with a different audience in the evening.
Like every other sitcom, the cast filmed "pickups" into the wee hours of the next morning without any audience. The end product is a mix of all three, with the audience reactions "sweetened" and edited by sound engineers as needed. (Often, studio audience reactions actually last too *long,* and have to be cut for time.)
