Hi im a student. I should be working hard to educate myself. Instead of working hard in order to work out the soln to a problem im going to ask it here and get an answer. This answer rarely has an explaination of how/why to get that answer. what are we going to do when only a select few students bother to learn the basics. with out learning the basics you cant fully understand the advanced stuff. which means we cant develop on advanced ideas. I would normally say " they will be caught in the act when it comes to test time" but the standards have been lowered to a point where anyone can pass. No1 even understands that the help that they provide isnt enough if you only give the answer, understanding how to get there is the most important part. I dont understand how this helps. and if you are one of the people who simply types in a home work problem tell me what you hope to gain from doing so. I can tell when you do bc i have worked out too many problems to count too count.

yes, it bugs me too. i'm glad you recognize this problem. at least you know you will learn the process to get solutions and not just wonder how to solve a problem after you've been given the answer.

Yes, it bothers me when a student asks for answers. As a former teacher, when I answer a homework question I try to give enough information to help the student get on track. For example, if they ask about irony in a story, I try to give one or two examples. This is what I would do for a student in class. There have been 2 questions from people who want answer keys for vocabulary. This infuriates me! It doesn't take that long to do the vocabulary homework they want the answers for. Those who ask for answers are cheating themselves. I don't know how they expect to pass the test unless they plan on copying answers from a classmate.

Homework Help is a double-edged sword.

You can post questions which you have already racked your brains for hours and have no idea how to solve it, and a simple hint (no answer) from a poster may make a lot of difference. On the other hand, you can simply post questions without bothering to even think about how to do it.

But from my experience, the ones who "gain" the most come from the latter, because if you are one of the former and post a more complicated question (duh, if not why would you not be able to solve it after struggling for so long!!), you get very very few replies and even responds from people accusing you for being lazy and all.

I'm not saying homework help has no use. I guess it can be of use if you wanna double-check your answer etc. But ultimately it's up to your self-discipline.

Homework help is like the computer game cheats. Used wisely, as a last resort, to get around an insoluble problem & start compreshension it's a good thing. But as an alternative to employing ones brain, a total waste of time.
