Normally,
1 + 1 = 2
Abnormally,
1 + 1 = 10 (binary number)
1 + 1 = 11 (counting in Roman Numerals)
1 + 1 = 3 (in the case of a couple having a baby)
1 + 1 = TWO (if you prefer words to numbers)
there are more, but you get the point ...

einstine said 2+2 is 5 . then thinking in that manner 1+1 becomes 3. Is this what you were looking for?
And if you are talking of programming then 1+1? will return 1. as we use if(2 > 1? true: false)
so 1+1 is greater than 1 and is non-zero . so it will return 1

Is a phylosopy question. Most people have their logic to justify the answer and it comes all type of answer in terms of maths, binary, humanity, logic and so on.
I guess the best answer is 1 + 1 = COULD BE ANYTHING AS YOU WISH TO BE. To a baby without the knowledge of the answer, 1 + 1 could be anything. We have the so called answer because we are being lead by the majority humanity's logic as the answer could be 2, 10, us and etc., without know that actually there is NO answer to all Question before Humanity Logic come in.

12 .....1 touchdown + 1 touchdown = 12 pts
or
10 .....1 nickel + 1 nickel = $.10
or
4 .....1 set of twins + 1 set of twins = 4 children
or
24 ..... 1 dozen + 1 dozen = 24
the answer is pretty much endless..... my class of 22 fourth graders came up with 76 in one day, including...
1 + 1 = 730
and
1 + 1 = 32
and
1 + 1 = 18
and my personal favorite
1 + 1 = 104
*1 year plus 1 year
1 chess side plus 1 chess side
1 baseball team plus 1 baseball team
and 1 deck of cards plus 1 deck of cards
not bad for 10 year olds huh?
See 1+1 doesn't always equal 2
