local flights within malaysia is currently operated by 3 airlines with exception of 1 airline that is operating from the old airport.
the 3 airlines are :
Malaysia Airlines : destinations are mainly from its hub at KLIA to Penang (PEN), Langkawi, Alor Star, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and other main cities in Malaysia. It also operating between borneo (sabah and sarawak) to KLIA. MAS was operating most of the routes before but it had to handed it out to rival AirAsia after route rationalisation plan effective 1st august.

AirAsia is the low cost carrier for South East Asia and experiencing tremendous growth since it's interception 5 years ago. AirAsia flies daily to every airport in Malaysia. It operate from Low CostTerminal at KLIA. Fares are generally cheaper than MAS because it's budget airline so dont expect yourself to be pampered during the flight. I strongly encourage you to plan and book your flight early because you will get the fare at rock bottom price (during promotion). the earlier you book the cheaper you get.
website http://www.airasia.com
Fly Asian Express (FAX) is AirAsia subsidiary that caters for flight within the island of Borneo. Often these destinations located in remote areas that can only be accessible by air. It serves mainly local and tourist who wish to experience eco-tourism. As for now the plane is still covered with MAS colours (it was contracted to MAS before) but all the flight crews now is officially working under AirAsia. Type of aircraft are Fokker-50 and Twin Otters. They are turboprop aircraft. The main hub is Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
website http://www.flyasianexpress.com like MAS and AirAsia you can book the flight online.
the least known airline is Berjaya Air. You dont need to know much about this as i'm sure many Malaysian doesnt know if they're exist or not. it's hub is at the old airport in subang (SZB) and flights to all island paradise destination such as Langkawi, Redang, Tioman. Fares are expensive because this type of service are mainly catered for chartered trip by travel agency.
i hope it helps. just email me if u wanna know more or if u have any question.
