the legendary George best said this about David beckham, he can't run, he can't tackle, he can't head the ball & he can't score goals from open play, apart from that he's not too bad!

Steven Gerrard is a better player than Beckham and Gerrard score's more than Beckham playing on the right. The reason why Beckham was dropped is because they were ACCOMMODATING him at the world cup. If Gerrard had started on the right had side of midfield England would of beaten Portugal.
The other night against Greece the whole team seemed to be playing much better and this is why Beckham will never start for England again. Why keep him in the squad as a Bench player. It will be better for the future if they rather have Jermain Jenas and Michael Carrick on the bench.
Gerrard has more pace, passion, he is a better passer of the ball now and he is fitter so why would anyone play beckham there?

Although controversial, time will show that this move was exactly what England needed exactly at the right time. I can't even believe Real Madrid is considering extending his contract. Send him to America (since most of us Yanks only know one soccer player - Beckham) and let him fill his coffers with some extra dough and fill up the stands with casual US fans that think he's the best player in the history of football.
Certainly fun to watch on free kicks and still capable of playing OK in higher leagues for another year or so. What the national team needs is to get younger players to play together for the Euro Cup and eventually the World Cup.

I saw the same question posed in a report on CNN and I would have to agree that the possility that Beckham won't be around next World Cup might be a big factor - after all like with most sports, you need to get the younger players opportunities to grow and develop. That being said, development clearl does not come with sitting on the sidelines. As with any other team sport, you need time playing together in real-game situations to really work out the kinks in the system, as well as develop the chemistry that is so very vital in any sport, particularly in football.

David Beckham is one of the pillars of the English squad and was the architect of the two out of three goals scored so far - an outcome guaranteeing England as one of the 16 teams in the next stage. His performance wasn't about getting the odds right - it's the measured result of his special talent, big-game experience and intelligent read of the game - not from the elevated view that spectator stands provide... but influencing games at eye-level playing fields. I dread to think of an English team without Beckham.

He is too old to kick and should retire soon and his skills are mostly all gone as he hardly see him scoring any goal for Real Madrid and England anyway. His penalty taking is one of the worst in the England team as he keep missing the penalty by kicking the ball too hard and he is also prone to injuries and have a bad temper and attitude

The word is HAD - he HAD extra-ordinary skills. It is painfully obvious, that it is not right to play someone, just because they are excelllent at free kicks. There are other GOOD free-kick tackers who are far better in open field play.
Plus he's got a real spaz hairdo.

he never was as good as the general public thought he was. yes he was about as good a free-kick taker as anyone in history, but now he's slower, and has really lost a step, plus he's aging, and they need to work the young guns in there. and he was a lot better when he left man u, but now he's going downhill, it's really sad because in his prime he was really good

I think the problem was that he had extra-ordinary skills at complaining.
