did you read " love in times of cholera?
do you think the main character, Florentino Ariza was in love or just became obsessed with Fermina Daza?

I would say, that though it was his obsession that controlled all his actions, there was a steady emotion of love lying underneath which revived after the death of her husband. A less passionate man would have perhaps been more practical and gone ahead with his own life. But this character is shown to be an extreme one.
I lived the book, btw. One of the most romantic ones I have read. Another would be Bridges of Madison County.

i think he was obsessed with the idea of being in love with fermina....but towards the end when he actually gets to know the woman for real for the first time...he starts to love her as well and not just the idea of her..

This book is often interpreted as a great love story, but to me it is the opposite, negatively paralleling "love" with disease. I mean, for pete's sake, at the end to be together in their "love" they are quarantined under a cholera flag!

often in Garcia's novels love is very close related with obsession. in this case i think it was both.
