He is a duck. Swimming is always best if you are a duck.

His character was created (around 1947) in an era just after the depression, so he probably doesn't care much for banking and lending institutions. Plus, its a kids' show. Its easier for little kids to understand how rich Scrooge McDuck is if he has a room in his mansion that's got piles of gold in it. As for swimming in his money...its probably symbolic of the phrase "he's swimming in it" meaning that he's got a ton of whatever it is.

Bank interest is generally less than 2%, and Scrooge McDuck prefers liquidity, so CD's are out of the question for him.

The real cash comes from being a loan shark. That's why he's always got cash around.

Thats all about trust. Uncle scrooge never trusts anyone, not even banks...Besides, why shld any1 keep in the bank when you can swim all over gold coins....

P.s;- Banks accept cash, there is no interest in depositing gold.....if you see, you'll see alot of gold coins less cash...more jewelry, just like a treasure box, in this case, a treasure mansion.

That money's not gonna swim in itself, somebody's gotta do it. And do you realize the hassle he would have to go through everyday just to swim in his money if he had it in the bank?

The character was developed in the post-depression era, by artists with post-depression minds, which I would assume would include mistrust of banks.
