Okay, this is kind of a serious medical question but yet a trivial question. A few of my friends and I were having this discussion, so I would like to know your answers.
Okay, say if you were given 3 hydrocodone 5mgs, and you took one right before you went to bed, and then took two when you woke up at 7am and got drug tested around 10am, would the drug test show that you have been taking the medication for some time contrary to just taking it the previous night and that morning?
Okay, and just out of curiosity, when you get drug tested, can they tell which medication you have been taking, say if you were taking hydrocodone 5mg, would it show up AS hydrocodone 5mg, or does it just show up positive?

Here's the dilly. The standard NIDA 5 drug test basically tests for 5 drugs. Cannabinoids(pot), Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, and Phencyclidine(PCP). An expanded test will test for additional drugs. Those are Barbiturates, Hydrocodone, Methaqualone, Benzodiazepines, and Methadone. The five test methods are urine, blood, hair, saliva, sweat, with urine being the cheapest to process. Any substance taken will be detectable within 1 day of use. Hair can detect most for as long as 90 days after use. tests can be conducted in two ways, reporting presence with no level or reporting a pass/fail. pass/fail must meet certain levels for example, cannabis must exceed immunoassay (50ng/ml) and GC/MS (15ng/ml). If your asking if the can pinpoint a certain brand of drug or if your taking a generic, the answer is no. It will detect the substance and the level present in you but not where it came from or how much you took to get you there. Like a breathalizer test, it can't tell you if you were drinking Bud or Miller!

If we're talking about just a general pre-employment type urine screen, hydrocodone usually won't even be one of the drugs they're searching for-it will only be illegal drugs so you might not even have to worry about it. However, if we're talking about a specialized drug test for recovering addicts, it will just show up as a barbituate/opiate-they can do further testing to see exactly what drug you were taking but it's not going to show any significant level if you've only taken those 3 in that 24 hour period-it looks for higher levels than that would produce. Most drug tests have an acceptable level of anything that won't even trigger the drug test to be positive. Like I said above, it would depend on WHO was administering the test and for what purpose but it would barely be a bleep on any drug test.

When taking a drug test they will ask you to fill out a form stating all the drugs you have taken in the last 10 or more days. You list it there. Then it will not count against you if you were given the drug by a doctor. They will most likely ask for a proof of prescription if it is a prescribed drug.
Depending on what they are looking for and why, they can figure out exactly what you have taken, or they can just break it down into categories, like opium and such.

The test would show up positive for opiates, as a parts per million value. The number of pills you are describing would be considered "therapeutic level", but they will still ask you for a prescription.
Hydrocodone leaves your system very quickly, so they can't really tell how long you have been taking it. Can you take a couple days off to clean your system prior to the drug test?

There is a way to tell if you've been abusing the narcotic for a long period of time.
It won't show us as "hydrocodone" it will show up as a narcotic.
If you pop a hot test...it's a hot test; especially if you don't have a prescription in your name for that narcotic.
BTW, if they take a hair sample for the drug test...they can go back as far as they want (depending on the length of your hair) to trace drugs and alcohol.
Best wishes... :o)

routine drug tests only test for the presence of a chemical (drug) in the blood or urine sample not the quantity - the test would thus show up positive and if it does you'd better have a doctors prescription handy

it depends on what they are testing for. some medications will show up in your hair folicles and they can tell how long you have been taking them. I think when they test they search for certain compontents that are common and then they figure out what medication that comes in. Rather than just saying "Yup she took hydrocodone".

I don't know for sure, but I would think that they would have to be testing you for that. Unless the test tested for a variety of drugs. I would not take them unless they were perscribed for me and then you need to follow the directions on the label. Never share your medication, you never know when someone may be allergic to your medication.

there is a floor that you need to exceed before you get a positive. They may find level x but they only report pass/fail.
Under those conditions you will test positive and for all they know you have been munching pills for years.
