less than the effect that astrosmash had!

actually, it just showed that there was a variety of games that could be played inside. no need to go to the arcade anymore!

because of that, arcades actually didn't do too bad either, because they still were a way to get out of the house, and were a good place to go as a kid

but throughout the 80's, it didn't make us stay inside most of the day, back then, there were always tons of kids outside, and now there seems to be a lot less

It seems hard to believe today; but, these games were cool and high-tech at the time. People like me who grew up in the early eighties still have nostalgia for Pac-Man. These games represented some of the first electronic games ever (after Pong) and enabled people to entertain themselves at a screen. Following the heights of board games and interactive activities with families and friends, these games also started a social shift in how people "play."

You also had VCRs surging into popularity around the same time, reinforcing this social change. Today the effects are even more clear, though technology is starting to swing the other way and bring people together in cyberspace (IM, cell phones, web communities).

The invention of these games, which started with the first video game Pong have caused a chain reaction, when literally hundreds of thousands of more games have been invented, which became more and more better in terms of grafx and sounds fx. What was originally coceived for recreational purposes has now become an addictive past time, and a billion dollar business.

Your question was what are the effects? It made not only the teens but all people of all ages, in all walks of life.... happier. (:
