Almost all of Crichton's book's are that good (as The Andromeda Strain.) Also, the Dune series and The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle & Steven Barnes (about settlers from a National Geographic settlement trip to a nearby Star who meet up with a Monster created by man's ecologically disturbing the environment and how they have to solve it on their own, its great!).
Lots of others out there too! Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverbert, again Robert Heinlein are just a few great ones.

Couple of classics from the scifi genre.
Ender's Game
Note that some wierd **** happened to the author after he wrote this book and he turned into a hippy trippy commie liberal idiot. There are several sequels to Ender's Game that are terrible. Ender's Game is a masterpiece, while the books that come after it are so filled with unempowered, whiney bullshit that it turned my stomach. Doesn't matter though. Ender's Game was written to stand alone while the sequels are written as an afterthought.
Starship Troopers
Far, far, FAR better than the movie
As a matter of fact, ANYTHING written by Heinlein is fantastic. For example, Stranger in a Strange Land is a rather deep and interesting bit of scifi.
Another scifi master is Frederik Pohl. Pick up a copy of Gateway and its sequels. Good stuff.

Andromeda Strain is popular, actaully. I read it just last week, as a matter of fact.
For a little known beaut of a book, read E.E. 'Doc' Smith's highly inacurate, old, and scientifically cliched Lensmen series, or his Skylark series. Check on amazon. I like them, but they are repetitive and amusingly incorrect when it comes to the science we now know.
Or, even better, read some of Robert A. Hienlend's works. Isaac Asimov is more renown, and I don't like most of his actaul books, but his compilations of short stories are amazing. To completely contradict what I've just said, the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite Sci Fi series, it's brilliant.
