I never took a speech class in college and I really wish I had. I am one of those people that are very nervous in front of a large group unless I am really excited about the topic I was talking about. For instance, if I thought the material was boring then I would get nervous because I thought that the audience I was talking to would be bored. I think speech classes can force you to become more comfortable in front of people which can obviously affect your personality because it makes you more confident and allows you to focus your thoughts into clear, concise sentences. Even if you are shy, you just have to realize that it's just a class. Most people are not even paying attention. Think about when you are watching someone giving a speech in class, usually you zone out and you can pick apart one from the other. (One of my teachers used to give quizzes based off of other people's presentations which is funny because it only reiterates the fact that most people aren't even paying attention.) The age-old saying "Imagine everyone in their underwear" never really worked for me but it might work for you. Just think about the fact that it will only be a fraction of your lifetime and the more you concentrate on trying to learn from it rather then what other people are thinking, the easier it might be. Also, while it might not appear like it to you, almost everyone I know is terrified of speaking in front of a group. Only a handful of people can feel really comfortable and usually it's because they have done it a lot and gotten used to it. Imagine, the first time you bungee jump it's really frightening but how will you feel after a hundred times. It still might be fun and scary but you will have come accustomed to it. Communications classes I have found are not as effective. They helped me a little but at my school, it was the bullshit major that all the athletes took! Anyways, good luck!

"forget" that they are there. Or put your "families" faces on them, you don't have trouble talking to them. For your information, more people fear speaking in public than fear death, so you are not alone by a long shot! We HAD to take communication in my college and have a video of ourselves performing the speech (ouch!) but I had already been a Minister and was used to speaking in front of people so it was no problem, so just think of everyone as a "friend or family" and go with it! Trust me, they are more worried about what your going to think and worrying about what your actually saying!
One piece of advice, watch the "nervous voice." I mean, when some people get up in front, their voices waver and you can tell their afraid. While this is natural, it makes it hard to listen to their speech. So relax, everyone in the class will go through the same thing!

It does help you deal with public speaking. I have used and perfected many of the skills I learned while in speach class. It is difficult to get through the first few speaches. Many people say view your audience in their underwear and silly things like that. The true secret is to remember that the people in the class are there with you. Some may even be considered friends. Rather then talk in public, talk to all of your friends. It makes talking a lot easier.
It seems silly, but people who you have not even spoken to can be your friends too. So when that guy asks you whats up while your walking around you won't freeze up becuase he is your friend too. It seems stupid, but I can speak in a room full of a hundred people and be at ease knowing they all are my friends.
Hails to the silent ones,
Silence

Yes it did.
Gave me a bit more confidence.
Made me aware of the "ums, err, and ahhhs"
And it also made me listen to others in a different light.
