It really depends on a number of things and what kind of model you want to be. To be a high fashion model, the chances of being really sucessful are probably one in 100,000. The chances of being a supermodel? One in a million maybe?

It's not just about being beautiful, it's about fitting into what clients want right now. It's about wearing clothes well, taking a great picture, and being able to meet the demands of the industry.

PS - you don't go to modeling school to become a high fashion model. It's a money making tool that some places have to get money from more commerical girls. A girl with potential can walk into an agency with a few snapshots and if they like her, they will teach her everything she needs to know - for FREE.

Well, going by the modelling shows on television, it looks like hard work. Not to mention that it is very competitive. I'm not sure that looks alone would be the best!
You would have to go to modelling school, get an agent and just keep on going even if you are not chosen time and again.
No matter what you do though, nothing is written in stone and there are never any guarantees. I mean, you could graduate from university to find yourself struggling to get into the field you have studied for the last 4 to 8 years.

The world needs all kinds of models. I'm not great looking and I'm not tall, yet I did department store modeling for juniors.

Mandisa who must have been 300 lbs and was on American Idol this past year just signed a modeling contract. You just have to know who wants your type in the modeling world. Some people do it on the side and some make a living.

Most models are tall and if you have seen most models in real life they aren't that great looking. The usually just have great bone structure and are photogenic. Also, your definition of beauty and most peoples definition of beauty isn't the same as the modelling worlds definition of beauty.

I had a friend one time, the prettiest girl I've ever seen in real life. She went to a model search and they picked her apart, told her she needed braces. I felt so bad for her; So I think it's real hard if you don't have the right connections.

It really boils down to: right timing/good luck. It's tough work, you can't say for certain how long it might take, or if you'll even make it. That's an extremely competitive career.
