I was at work the other day and this song came on from Gordon Lightfoot, Now I seem to think along with half of the other girls at work that Cher sang a remake or something with AT LEAST some of the lyrics, its now become an argument with a couple ofthe older ladies that it never happened. can anyone help me?

"If you Could read my mind"

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark, or a fortress stron
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see.

If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel,
The kind the drugstores sell
Then you reached the part, where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heros often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to tak.

I'ld wall away like a movie star, who gets burned in a three-way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way and I've got to say that I just don't get
I don't know where we went wrong bit the fellin's gone and I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark, or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But the stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelin's that you lack
I never thought I could act this way and I've got to say taht I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong but the feelin's gone and I just can't get it back.

Not sure about Cher, but I know for a fact that Olivia Newton John covered this in the late 70's/early 80's.

Others worth mentioning: Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald, Canadian railway triology (classic!), Beautiful, Cobwebs and Dust, Don Quixote, Early Morning rain and of course Love and Maple Syrup (Could Gord have come up with a better Canadian title?). Thanks for making me think, I havent heard Gord in ages!

Song Parodies -> If I Could Read Your Mind
"If I Could Turn Back Time" Based on the performance by Cher
"If I Could Read Your Mind" Parody by JOEBEASTYG78
To the people who like to nit-pick. (See the comments for my parody of Pain From Stools)
If I could read your mind
Then I would find a way
Then I would take back those lyrics that hurt you. Then I'd say

I don't know why I wrote the things I did
I don't know why they said the things they said
Pride's like a knife some people like to slice
Perfection's their weapon you'd better be right

I don't really mean to slight you
I just want to let you know
I wright my songs and why, but baby

If I could read your mind. If I knew what to say
I wouldn't change my lyrics that hurt you, and you'd say
You're name should be in stars
Nobody wrights better than you
Then you'll all love me, love me like you need to do

If I could read your mind

My words don't matter, they were torn apart
Like someone took offense as if I'm not smart
You think that you know more, I tell you I don't care
You gave me material darling, take that, there

I won't tell you that I'm sorry
But I will right to you this song
I have a real sick mind, and ooh...

If I could read your mind. If i knew what to say
I wouldn't change my lyrics that hurt you and you'd say
Your name should be in stars
Nobody wrights better than you
Then you'll love me, love me like you need to do
Oooohhh

If I could read your mind
If I could read your mind
If I could read your mind
Ooh baby

I didn't really mean to slight you
I just want to let you know
I wright my songs and why
Ooohh

If I could read your mind. If I knew what to say
I wouldn't take back those lyrics that hurt you
I should be singing in bars
I wouldn't have fans like you
People would love me, love me
Like you need to do

If I could read your mind (read your mind)
If I knew what to say (what to say)
Then baby, maybe, maybe
I'd say......

I don't know if Cher remade it, but I've been dying to know who sang the remake that was off the Studio 54 Soundtrack! If anyone knows please drop me a line!

Yes, she sang it on either THE SONNY & CHER SHOW or THE CHER SHOW in one of her spotlight solo performances. If you wikipedia either show, it should show the episode and date it first aired. Cher did NOT record it on any of her albums, however.
