That kind of depends on where you go to school and what classes you take. Actually, let me rephrase that, that ENTIRELY depends on where you go to school and what classes you take.
I'm one year into college and I do A LOT of homework. Last year I had weekly or twice-weekly problem sets for math and chemistry, lab reports for biology and chemistry, several papers for humanities, several little projects of various forms, and endless required reading (much of which was required for class discussions), as well as studying for tests. All of which counted towards my grades. But then I was taking the most demanding possible course load at a very competitive school.
As other posters have mentioned, at some schools you're not graded on anything but attendance and test scores, and everything else is just optional to help you learn the material. Depends on the school and the professor.

Depends on what you major in. I found that I had a lot less homework to do but that might have also been because I wasn't living with my parents, and therefore, didn't have to do as much. Some classes require a lot of reading, some have assignments, some have essays, some have none, one class I had didn't even require for you to do anything but show up to the three tests and exams we had. That class was greaaaaat. But again, it depends what college, what major, what class and what teacher. Some teachers are more interested in attendance then assignments. It really all depends. Shouldn't you be asking the work to party ratio? Because the parties are ... well ... awesome and out of this world. Good luck and I hope you have fun. I wouldn't trade my four years for the world. P.S. Apply to Boston College!

Well, I graduated form college some years ago. I got a Degree in Psychology with a minor in Education. And sometimes I thought I was gonna quit. And that crossed my mind in moments of real desperation. My answer is ...Yes, there is a lot of work to do in college. I don't want to scare you, this is just my own experience. Since the first day of classes of each semester, all the professors used to announce the topics and due dates for papers due at the end of the semester. So since the very first day I had to start doing research. Plus, homework everyday, work in the classroom, essays, oral presentations, quizzes, midterms and the finals. I was always busy. But The day of my graduation was the most exciting and happy day of my life. To see my family, mom and brother so proud of me when I got my Diploma was the best prize for all the nights without sleeping, and the frustration and tears when I thought I was not gonna be able to finish. But... I did, and so can you and everybody who wants to make a career. If you are going to college,... Congratulations, work hard and enjoy all the experiences you gonna get there for life. I'm very proud of myself that I did.

it depends where you go and what you major in. you get to be more independent and there is less work but it is worst alot more then in high school, meaning one essay can be worth 30% of a class, but you get lots of time and will have plenty of resources to help you do your best work. For homework like in history and english it was just a lot of reading and a few small assiments. it goes fast and the homework generaly connects to the tests and essays so even a a professor doent chech homework they work they do see will give them that info. good luck, its and that hard just doent do it all at once and get hepl when you need it

the rule of thumb is for every hour of class time, you spend about three hours of research, studying, writing papers, etc. The amount of work you do is up to you, and your resulting grade. It also depends on your course. For example, if you're an english major, then expect many essays. I would expect less if your a math major.
Overall, the amount of work put in should reflect your grade. Study well, write well, and most importantly, show up for class and ask questions. Every professor will remember you and you will stay interested and maybe even learn something.

I just finished my first year and I had a good amount of homework. It's not horrible though if you're taking mostly GEs. I wrote two or three big papers.
